TCP-R: A Protocol for Handling Out of Order Packets in Satellite Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are link level retransmissions and multipath routing. Moreover, satellite networks exhibit high corruption rates causing packet losses. Reordering and corruption of packets decrease the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion in the network. We consider satellite networks and analyze the performance of such networks when reordering and corruption of packets occurs. We propose a solution that could significantly improve the performance of the network when reordering and corruption of packets occur in a satellite network. We report results of our simulation experiments, which support this claim.

TCP-R with EPDN: Handling out of Order Packets in Error Prone Satellite Networks
Studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are link level retransmissions and multipath routing. Moreover, traditional satellite networks exhibit high corruption rates causing packet losses. Reordering and corruption of packets decrease the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion in the netw...
متن کاملA Proactive Transport Protocol for Performance Enhancement of Satellite based Networks
Current TCP Protocols have lower throughput performance in satellite networks mainly due to the effect of long propagation delays and high link error rates. In this paper a new congestion control protocol for satellite networks is proposed. The protocol uses a proactive approach and is composed of novel ideas like Proactive Slow Start, Proactive Congestion Avoidance and Decision based Error han...
متن کاملRobust TCP (TCP-R) with Explicit Packet Drop Notification (EPDN) for Satellite Networks
Numerous studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are regular handoffs occurring between neighboring satellites. Reordering of packets decreases the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion of the network. We consider satellite networks and analyze the performance of such networks when reor...
متن کاملA Transport Interworking Protocol for the Support of TCP/IP based Applications over the ESW Satellite Network in the GMBS Environment
We investigate the efficient handling of TCP/IP based applications over the GEO satellite segment of the Global Mobile Broadband System (GMBS), namely the EuroSkyWay (ESW) satellite network. We first briefly, summarize the state-of-the art of TCP protocol support over GEO satellite networks; then, we propose a novel approach, based on a “hybrid” inter-working protocol, named IWL-TCP, which oper...
متن کاملInternet via Satellite: Problems and Solutions A Flash Networks Ltd. White Paper
Satellite links are increasingly used for Internet/Intranet applications, which are predominantly based on TCP. Unfortunately, TCP exhibits marginal performance and excessive resource consumption in a satellite environment. The causes for TCP’s performance issues are presented, as well as some issues related to the usage of HTTP over satellite links, and the implications of carrying a large num...
